Prototype theory makes a crucial distinction between central and peripheral sense of words. Geeraerts explores the implications of this model for a theory of semantic change, in the first full-scale treatment of the impact of the most recent developments in lexicological theory on the study of meaning change. He identifies structural features of the development of word meanings which follow from a prototype-theoretical model of semantic structure, and incorporates these diachronic prototypicality effects into a theory of meaning change.

’To Speak is Never Neutral’ presents a vital selection of the range of Luce Irigaray’s writings, revealing the origin and development of many ideas central to her thought. The earliest essays included here reveal Irigaray’s debt to structural linguistics and deconstruction drawn from her initial studies in the language of schizophrenia. The later essays present Irigaray’s highly original explorations of psychoanalysis and language. Seminal essays published here include The Rape of the Letter, Sex as Sign, the Setting in Psychoanalysis, The Poverty of Psychoanalysi

Antonymy is recognized as an important type of meaning relation in natural language, yet there are very few detailed empirical studies of the topic. Through an analysis of a corpus of forty-three contemporary English-language novels, Mettinger isolates ten syntactic frames within which antonyms are regularly found: these serve as a useful heuristic tool for eliciting opposites from texts. Arguing that there are two kinds of antonyms--systematic and non-systematic opposites--he analyzes numerous pairs of antonyms, highlighting an important semantic relationship.

This textbook is a systematic and accessible introduction to the lexicology of modern English. Lexicology is the branch of linguistics that studies all aspects of the vocabulary of a particular language. The book provides an account of the sources of modern English words and studies the development of vocabulary over time. It examines: What are words? Where do English words come from? How are words made up? How do words ’mean’? How are words used? How can words be investigated? This new edition of the best-selling textbook has been revised and updated throughout. A new chapter has
